Born in 19th February, 1936, to Chief Buhari S.I and Chief Igwe Salamiya, S.I. His father was a great warrior of his age, a former officer of the Royal Niger Company, who rose to the rank of Commander of the Royal Niger Company. His father was set on him learning his trade of warfare at an early age. So he left his village of Ibafo-Edo to study under his father's tutelage
He attended IBBY College, Isolo, Lagos State, Nigeria for five years between 1946 and 1952. He attended the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at London University from 1952 to 1956 where he earned a degree in Economics. He later earned his PhD degree from the University of Ibadan in 1985.
Professor Buhari S.I is currently a Professor Emeritus of Economics at the University of Ibadan.
